The Section Chair is responsible for putting together the Section program at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association. ASA allocates the number of sessions based on the membership size of the section. Typically, the section has one paper session, shares a roundtable session with the Social Psychology section, and hosts a “chair’s hour,” held during the first hour of the business meeting slot. The Section Chair determines the size and composition of the program committee in consultation with Section Council. He/she, along with program committee members, decides whether the paper session is open or invited. Often the “chair’s hour” constitutes a thematically oriented invited session. The Section Chair is responsible for communicating with ASA about who will organize sessions. Session organizers follow ASA procedures for ensuring that session information is submitted for the ASA program. Additionally, the Section Chair ensures advertisement of session through the section newsletter.
